Marvin Earl Glaser, 78, of Scio, died Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Mennonite Home in Albany.
Marvin was born on the family farm west of Lebanon, the son of William F. and Vesta (Bebb) Glaser. For his first eight years of schooling, he attended the one-room Sand Ridge Grade School; then he graduated from Lebanon Union High School with the class of 1953. During his youth he worked with his father and brother on the family farm near Peterson's Butte. He enjoyed climbing the butte and camping there with friends.
He received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior when he was 8 years old at a Bible class at Sand Ridge School.
He married Mary Roberts on Sept. 7, 1956, at First Baptist Church in Lebanon. Their first home was in the rural area between Lebanon and Albany (now known as Gerig Drive), and in 1960 they purchased a farm in the Scio-Crabtree area where they have continued to reside.
Marvin owned and operated a logging business for five years. In 1965, he began making fiberglass products for local farmers and businesses including Consumers Power Company and Western Kraft Paper Mill. He eventually made fiberglass church baptismal tanks and his business, Marv's Fiberglass Inc., made baptisteries for over 2,800 churches throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. He retired in 2006 after 41 years in the fiberglass manufacturing business.
Marvin enjoyed travel in their motor home and he was especially interested in classic cars and old farm machinery.
He was an active member of Scio Baptist Church for over 50 years, serving many years as a deacon, an usher and a greeter at the front door of the church. He served as a member of the committee that planned and built Scio Baptist's new church building in 1992.
He is survived by Mary, his wife of 58 years; sons Michael Glaser and wife Shannan, and Mark Glaser and wife Sara of Scio; and daughters Margery Straw and husband Eric of Scio, and Marcia Klippenes and husband Donald of Bend. His 11 grandchildren and their spouses are: Craig and Holli Glaser, Brian and Jordyn Glaser, Lindy Glaser, Jennifer Straw, Kevin and Sessha Straw, Matthew Straw, Rebekah Straw, Gretchen and Merritt Acheson, William and Natalie Glaser, Jessica Glaser, and Caleb Glaser. There are nine great-grandchildren: Braedon, Aubrey, Krissa, Davis, Rory and Linnea Glaser, and Ruth, Mary and Daniel Acheson. He is also survived by his siblings, Delbert Glaser of Lebanon and Neva Lee of Oxnard, Calif.
A viewing was held on Sept. 14, at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A private burial will be held. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Scio Baptist Church, 38968 N.W. Third St., Scio.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
