Ayers Mason was a farmer, a large owner of timber lands and more or less engaged in lumbering in Bethel, Newry, Grafton and around Umbagog and other northern Maine lakes, and by good management accumulated quite a large property. He was possessed of a kindly disposition and was a man who could never lack friends wherever he might be, was an early anti-slavery man and an original Republican. Decomber 29, 1815, his name was on the petition to the Committee of massachursetts for a Company of Artillery in Bethel.
