On 26 June 1886 William W. Spofford gave a deposition in Boston, Suffolk, MA before J. A. Williamson a Special
Examiner of the Pension Office to answer [as a witness] to the denial of his mother's Widow's pension based on rumors she was openly living with another man and not entitled to her Civil War Pension from his father and her husband [Daniel Boardman Janes]

"His age is 23 years occupation machinist. Post Office address Chelsea, Mass. Is the adopted son of Daniel Webster Janes and wife and is the son of Pensioner and her husband Daniel W. Janes. Has lived in Chelsea, Mass since the Fall of 1880. Was raised in Georgetown, Mass from the age of five years. During his residence in Chelsea not a week passed but what he was not in visiting his mother the Pensioner. "WILLIAM W.SPOFFORD
Chula Vista - Private services will be conducted at 3 PM Wednesday at Greenwood Drawing Room Chapel for William W. Spofford who died Saturday in a local hospital. Interment will follow. the family requess that flowers be omitted.
Mr Spofford, a retired Civil Service Employee had resided here twenty-two years at 297 Moss Street. His wife Mrs Lillian E. Spofford survives."
