obit courtesy of Adams Family Folliage Tree on Ancestry newspaper clipping [source unknown] In Lapeer, Jun 16th, B. F. Moore, seventy-seven years and 5 days. At his home- two miles east of this city, on the 16th day of June, died- Benjamin Franklin Moore, aged seventy-seven years and five days. His death was due principally to the general breaking down of the system by old age and by the ceasless activity and application to business for which he had been noted during his whole life. Mr Moore was born in Ware, Vermont, and while yet a mere boy, he left home to make his own way in the world. When only eighteen years of age he was taken in to the employ of Sylvannus Cobb, a capitalist and well known through Eastern New York, and given charge over a warehouse, several farms and a number of boats on the Erie Canal; and along the whole line of the Erie Canal Mr Moore was known for his indefatigable energy, faithfulness and endurance. About the year 1840, Mr Moore moved to Lafayette, Indiana wher he engaged in the grain business. Several times by fire and reverses in business he was left with nothing but his courage and his habits of industry; but these were always a sufficient capital for him and in 1868 he retired from the grain business after having amassed a considerable fortune. In 1869 he removed to Lapeer and invested in [pine?] lands six miles east of this city. In passing to and fro between his home and his mills he was captivated by the farm of Mr. George Rood and in 1870 he purchased the place and removed there where he has ever since resided. Mr Moore took great pride and pleasure in improving and beautifying his home and he has left it one of the most complete, beautiful and well appointed farms in the state; a fitting monument of his industry. Besides the farm, which he left to his younger son George, he left a large amount of other property which was divided among his four remaining children. For many years he has been Vice President of First National Bank in this city, he gave largely to the church and was charitable but unostentatious. Mr. Moore was in the highest sense a good man, a good christian, a good husband and a good father and he has left for his children the legacy of a good name and a noble example. He was held in the highest esteem by the entire community and his loss will long be felt. His life was well rounded and complete, He left nothing unfinished and now he is at rest, during the last five months of his life he suffered intensely but always with patience and fortitude, never complaining. Mr Moore leaves a wife and five children, George, Emma and Lizzie residing in this vicinity; Cynthia residing in Ann Arbor; and Sands F., a lawyer residing in Detroit.
