The Elyria Republican/Elyria, Ohio/Thursday 18 Feb 1886 Mrs. Hannah Straw age 87yrs and born Portsmouth, New Hampshire died from old age. ..survived by 2 sons and 3 daughters.
The Elyria Republican (Elyria, Ohio)25 Feb 1886, ThuPage 1 "...She and her husband are justly entitiled to be regarded as pioneers of Lorain county. Mrs Straw was among the early settlers of this county, and with the exception of one year's residence in Erie County, was a resident of Lorain County for fifty-three years. Mrs Hannah Colbath Straw was the daughter of Mr. George Colbath and was born in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire 21 April 1798. She continued to reside in her native place and at the age of twenty-five, in the year 1823 was married to Mr Ezra Straw of the same place. Soon after marriage she and her husband moved to the State of New York where they resided for about ten years and where three of the five now living children were born. In 1833 they came to Ohio, stopping about one year in Dover, form whence they removed to Huntington, Lorrain County where they became members of the M. E. church and continued to dwell for twelve years. they then removed to Vermillion. Erie County, resided one year, and thence came to Amherst and made it their long-looked-for and last earthly home. On Nov 22, 1855 Mr Straw sickened and died leaving the wife a widow with two sons and three daughters, four of whom were already married. After the death of her husband her sons-in-law Mr. G. N. Barnes and Mr. W. P. Potter furnished her with a home living with one about seventeen years and the other about fourteen years, but the other members we learn contributed towards her maintenance. Mrs Straw was a woman of more than ordinary physical vigor and mental capacity. She had but a short period of illness and up to within less than a half hour of her death she was able to speak clearlya dn intelligibly. She expired with out a visible struggle and seemed to fall into a peaceful slumber. the burial services took place at the M. E. church on Wednesdy conducted by Rev. Stevick, assisted by the writer [C. C. P.] and were attended by many old acquaintances and family friends...."
