Research of Ron Carlton on Rootsweb:
John Hastings was the only child of Joseph and Mary (Sanborn)
Hastings who remained in New Hampshire, after his mother died when he was
about 13 years old. The rest of the family removed to Quebec, Canada.
John was a farmer and lived on the south bank of Smith's River. He was
also a millwright, builder and suveyor. He operated a sawmill owned by
Robert Smith who was held in such esteem that John and his wife Sarah
(Morrill) Hastings named their first son after him (Robert Smith
Hastings). John Hastings was a farmer on south bank of Smith's river in
the Borough, later lived at Profile Falls. John and Sarah Hastings are
buried in Bunker Hill Cemetery in Hill, New Hampshire. Sarah's parents,
Robert and Betsey (Smart) Morrill were buried in the old village of Hill
and their graves were later removed to Bunker Hill Cemetery when, in
about 1938 a flood control dam was constructed near Franklin, New
Hampshire requiring the village of Hill to relocate
