Edward J. Straw, age 53, of Lawler, died Friday, December 24, 2004 in an automobile accident near Lawler. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. The pall will be placed on the casket by his wife and three children. The offertory gifts will be presented by Karleen, Morgan, Tierney and Delaney Lensing. Nathan Mracek will be the Lector. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery with Tony Schuchhardt, Dave Auschstetter, Kenny Steinlage, Jerry Steinlage, Jason Steinlage and Brandon Kleve as pallbearers. Military Honors will be conducted by the Harold Redman American Legion Post of Lawler. Honorary Pallbearers are Joe Dagit, Lyle Njus, Jeremy Limburg, Jason Byrne, Larry Hruska, Dewey and Mary Brincks, Pat and Kim Lensing, Gene and Carol Winter. Friends may call 2-8 Monday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in NEW HAMPTON, where there will be a 6:00 p.m. Scripture Service and a 6:30 p.m. Video Memorial Tribute. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday. Ed was born October 14, 1951, in New Hampton the son of Earl D. and Sarah F. Steadman Straw. He attended grade school in Lawler and graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1970. While in school he helped the Njus boys with farming and was active in wrestling where he placed 4th at the 1969, Iowa State Wrestling Tournament. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1970 and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1972. On September 9, 1972, at St. John's Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson he was united in marriage to Karen Marie Huber. To this union three children were born; Craig in 1973, Jennifer in 1976 and Cynthia in 1980. Ed and Karen lived in Kentucky while Ed was in the Army and moved back to Iowa where he worked for John Deere, Kohlmeyers as well as helping local farmers. Ed and Karen owned Straw's DX in Lawler and the last 20 years he worked for Brincks Construction, was a substitute mail carrier and bartended at the Brite Spot, Jackson Heights and the LT Tap. Eddie enjoyed remodeling his home, cutting wood, camping, canoeing and watching Turkey Valley and Iowa State athletic events. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends for his sense of humor, infectious smile and his love. Survivors include his wife; Karen; One son; Craig Straw of Lawler; Two daughters; Jennifer (Craig) Kurtenbach of Lawler and Cynthia (Brandon) Uhlenberg of Fredericksburg. Four grandchildren; Kelsey and Garrett Kurtenbach; Jackson and Hannah Uhlenberg. His mother; Sarah Straw of Lawler. Three brothers; Dana Straw of Daly City, CA; David (Shirley) Straw of Littleton, CO; A.J. (Janelle) Straw of Protivin. Five sisters; Karen (Rick) Huber of Lawler; Vickie (Randy) Mracek of Protivin; Paula (Leo) Kout of Lawler; Diane (Bill) Gebel of Lawler and Deb Straw of Lawler. His mother-in-law; Eleanor Huber of Ft. Atkinson. He was preceded in death by his father; Earl on October 1, 2000, a brother; Danny on September 4, 1968 and his father-in-law; Philip Huber on May 7, 1984.
