Probably named for Agnes' father John Colbreath.
Although his date of birth has not been authenicated, he was probably born in Pembroke. Like his brothers before him he joined the military at an early age. (Carter) tells of a John Moor (Capt Daniel Ladd's Co) scouting in the neighborhood of Pembroke in the summer of 1746, along with William Moor and William Moor Jr, James and Samuel Moor. John would have been about 10 at the time...not unusual for a lad who had been taught survival skills at an early age. By 1752 a John Moor appears in the muster-roll of the company in His Majesty's Service under the command of Moses Foster.(whose son Ephraim would marry John's sister some ten or so yrs later). Again in 1755 John served as an Ensign (April to November). He again entered in March of 1757 (uander Capt Richard Emery) in the Crown point Expedition and his departure was November 5, 1757.
There are other entries for John Moor in the years of 1775 through the years of 1777 but it is not possible to say for sure this is he..A John Moor of Deerfield, marching for Pembroke served in Capt Daniel Moor's Co (John's brother) but this may have been a nephew of Daniel and son of William or James. It is most likely John was active in the Revolutionay War as were his brothers and when he attained the rank of Captain is unknown.
John married for the first time to Martha (last name unknown). She was born
c.1740 and bore him 9 children..the last two were twin girls and Martha died shortly after their birth..probably of complications of the birth. It is not known where they resided but their fifth child was born in Pembroke so we can assume the first four were also...the twin girls' births are listed in Hopkinton so they may have moved there sometime after the birth of son Daniel. In 1782 John sold property in Pembroke and it may have been at this time that he relocated...Martha's death is listed in the Congregational Church Records of Hopkinton so she may be buried there. According to Hopkinton Town Records the Moore family lived in the "Sugar Hill area near Sam Brackenbury's...two old cellar holes nearby' and by 1800 the family had "moved over the line to Weare".
Before this move took place Capt John married again to Meriam Straw, the daughter of Samuel Straw and Ruth Flanders. She was quite a bit younger (26) than he (49). The marriage was solemnized in the Hopkinton Congregational Church on September 21, 1784 and Meriam gave birth to 4 more children.
The final resting places of Meriam and Capt John are unknown. One researcher has listed Weare as his place of death but no source to substantiate it.
In Crown point, NY where one of their sons is buried there is also a grave for a Julia Moore, daughter of John Moore who died April 13, 1790. Capt John had a son (John) born on that day who relocated to Crown point after he was married ..why is there a child buried there when Capt John's children are all listed as being born In NH? We may never know but it is of interest to me as I am descended from John who may have had a twin sister named Julia. (John named his only daughter Julia).
