MAHLON R. STRAW OPERATED STRAW FARM, ACTIVE IN GRANGE: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Portland Press Herald (ME) - November 6, 1996 Mahlon R. Straw, 76, of Straw Road died Monday after a long illness, at the home where he was born. A lifelong local resident, he was the son of Robert A. and Jennie S. Deering Straw. In 1938, he graduated from Gorham High School. Mr. Straw owned and operated Straw Farm for his whole working life. He was a member, a former deacon and had served of the sanctuary committee of Westbrook Warren Congregational Church. He was an honorary member of Harmony Masonic Lodge, a 60-year member, past master and held other offices in the North Scarborough Grange. He was a member and past master of Cumberland Pomona Grange, a member and past state deputy of the Maine State Grange. He served 12 years on the executive committee of Maine State Grange and was a director of the Rose Drill Team for the State Grange for several years. He was also a seventh-degree member of the National Grange. In 1976, he was the recipient of the Maine State Grange Farm Family Award and the Living Legend Award, in recognition of 60 years of dedicated service, from the North Scarborough Grange. He served on the Maine Dairy Promotion Board for 12 years and also on the State Agricultural Committee. He was a vice chairman of the Soil Conservation Committee in Cumberland County. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Beatrice Sargent Straw; a son, Kevin M.; two daughters, Kathleen F. Robbins and and Cheryl D. Walls, all of Gorham; a sister, Ethel S. Rowe of Buxton; and six grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St. Rev. Harold Shepard will officiate. Burial will follow in South Gorham Cemetery.
