NORRIS W. ROWE Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - Bangor Daily News Bangor Daily News BUXTON - Norris W. Rowe, 76, of 74 Mary Jane Road, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at the Maine Veterans' Home, in Scarborough, with his loving family by his side after a long illness. He was born Nov. 19, 1928, in Buxton, a son of Leon and Carlene Owens Rowe. He was educated in Buxton schools and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. In his earlier years, he was employed in various construction work. Later on, he had his own business doing excavation and site work. His true calling came when he acquired his first pair of lead-yoke oxen from Nova Scotia. For many years, he and his wife, Ethel, were familiar faces at many of the local agricultural fairs across the state. Years ago, they appeared in a popular Megabucks commercial in which Norris stated he was "heading north" but Ethel said she was "headed south". It was rumored that they had actually won Megabucks, but Norris made no bones about squashing that rumor. His beard and his oxen were the subject of many pictures and newspaper articles over the years. Many local children even thought of him as Santa and often greeted them with a profound "Ho Ho Ho". He was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley Rowe and Leon Rowe Jr.; his stepfather, Ernest Jones, and a great- grandson, Orrin Blake. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ethel Straw Rowe of Buxton; four sons, Rusty Rowe and Delores Miner of Buxton, Peter and Jan Rowe of Etna, Dwight and Gail Sheperd of Buxton, and Robert Sheperd and Anna McClay of Buxton; three daughters, Holly Waterman and George Hanscom of Casco, Amanda and Norman McConihe of Limington, and Linda Dahms of Shapleigh; a brother, Curtis Rowe and his wife, Dot, of Buxton; four sisters, Mazy Blough of Mirror Lake, N.H., Myrna McKenney and her husband, Robert, of Falmouth, Carlend Ehrenborg of Buxton, and Methel Kimball of Snellville, Ga.; 25 grandchildren; and 26 great-grand-children. He was a popular and loving grandfather to all of them. Also surviving are many loving nieces and nephews, and his beloved Boston Terrier, "Boomer". Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the York Funeral Chapel, 71 Maple St., Cornish. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the funeral home in Cornish. Burial will follow at Meeting House Hill Cemetery, in Hollis. Pastor Charles Storey will officiate.
