He and his brother Daniel under the firm name of W. and D Moor were for a long time prominent among the business men as traders, as boatmen and more especially as builders of steamboats. In this industry they were easily first. Of the boats employed on the river between Waterville and Gardiner the larger part were owned and run by them. One of their boats was on the Merrimac and more than one on the rivers of California. After the disolution of partnership William went west and lived in Minneapolis till his death.
William and Daniel were leading captains of the industry in the building of steamboats. The first was Ticonic built at Gardiner. She made the first trip to Waterville June 1, 1832 and was rec'd with great demonstrations of rejoicing. The Water Witch built by them in 1842 was the first steamer launched in Waterville, ME. (Centenial History of Waterville, Me 1802-1902 by Rev. Whittemore)
The Water Witch was 93 feet long 13 feet and 11 inches wide and 3 feet 4 1/2 inches deep and measured 42 tons. ( A Maritime History of Bath, ME and the Kennebec River Region by Wm A. Baker vol I Bath, Maine 1973.
