Josiah Chandler was born August 21, 1812 and died in Dexter February 14, 1892. He was twice married. His first wife was Abby B. Straw, who died August 1, 1855. On October 30, 1856 he married Miss Elizabeth Abbott, daughter of. Samuel and Sarah (Palmer) Abbott, who lived many years in Dexter on the north side of the lake. They had two children, Abby A., who is a well remembered teacher in town and was assistant in the Dexter High school for a number of years, and Charles C., who was a woolsorter and lived and worked in Pittsfield.
Mr. Chandler was a merchant in Dexter for a long time. With him was associated his nephew, Thomas A. Chandler, who carried on the business after his uncle retired.
Josiah Chandler lived in the house on Spring Street later the property of Dr. Joseph H. Murphy.

The Dexter Gazette 2-17-1892 JOSIAH CHANDLER. Josiah Chandler, long a prominent figure in Dexter business circles, died at his home on Spring street Sunday evening, aged 80 years. For many years Mr. Chandler was in trade in this village, and by strict integrity and industry had acquired considerable property. For some time past his health has been failing. He has held several town offices to the satisfaction of all and was in every way an estimable citizen. Mr. Chandler's funeral occurred today, Rev. W. H. Gould officiating.
