The son of Moses Strew and an unknown mother, John Dodge Strew was likely named after John Dodge, a prominent resident of Bath, New Hampshire in that era who was active in the town's affairs. He married Miranda Wallace in Lancaster, New Hampshire on December 31st, 1815, the young couple soon thereafter relocating to Smyrna, Chenango County, New York, where they raised their six children and where he worked for a time as a blacksmith. Though little is known about his military career, John Dodge Strew served in the New York Militia as an officer, achieving the rank of Major while in service with the 105th Infantry Regiment (Brigade 32, Division 17), his enlistment ending at some point before 1858. Toward the end of his life he took up residence with his wife in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, to be near his daughter Helen, where he died in early 1868.
