Walter Straw to Almira Lockwood Straw Wednesday Sept 30 , Panama, Newaygo, Michigan Panama, Newago, Wednesday Sept 30 Dear Wife, I am well and away here in the county of Newago. I am now with Ebernezer Dobson. He is well. I parted with Liberty last sunday in Kalamazoo. He was sick and made up his mind to go home. I went on a few miles and camped for the night in a wagon that stood under a wagon shed. It was not the most comfortable place I ever found to sleep. The next morning I went on to Grand Rapids and lodged under a tree. I have found good lodging in my day at that. In the morning I started again, came through to a place called Fremont which was the simple distance of fifty seven miles and today I am Lame enough. I feel as though I were spavined. I have been to look at a piece of land today. It lays well but there is no water on it and the soil is very light. There is a road runs right through it with 80 on each side of the road if I feel like traveling. I don't feel like writing much tonight. I am so sleepy I will be so glad when I get this racing around done. I must tell you of my adventure. Last night in the Nine Miles Pine when I got about half way through there was a bear came out of the bushes right opposite of me. I though at first it was a dog. I called him as I would a dog. It was so dark I couldn't telll the difference till I was within a few feet of him but when I came to see the difference I was as brave as a sheep. I turned and walked right the other way right sudden. I will take a look nearer the Lake but I am so sleepy I am going to steer for Big Rapids. If I knew where to tell you to write I would but I don't. From your old man. This work is worse than soldiering. I will be glad when it is over.
