research of P H Thompson on www.rootsweb.com: Note provided by Joni Petersen -James E. Johnson was born near Quebec, Canada, April 3, 1828. James spent the first 14 years near Quebec, Canada, then moved to Vermont for 2 years, and then to Manchester, New Hampshire. Spent 5 years in Amoskeag Mills of Manchester, at that occupation which his father taught him. Then to Lowell, Massachusetts for 2 years at same, and March 5, 1853 he moved to Manitawos, Wisconsin to engage in farming and lumbering. James was living in Wisconsin when the Civil War broke out in August 1862, he enlisted in County, K 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, serving until December following , when because of serious illness was discharged. He was in the Battle of Perryville Kentucky, was taken as prisoner of war, was soon paroled and went to Camp Lew Wallace, Columbus, Ohio. He remained there till mustered out. He was a staunch Republican and a strong adherent to the principles of that party. James was a member of Gen. Lyon Post No. 11, Grand Army of the Republic. James was married to Elizabeth Ham at Lowell, Massachusetts, July 1, 1852. Mrs. Johnson was born in Great Falls, New Hampshire, March 7, 1832. She was one of 10 children (5 sons & 5 daughters) born to Seth and Hannah (Layton) Ham. Her father was born in Dover, New Hampshire, and was a baker by trade. He lived in Wisconsin for 29 years. In 1882 James came to Lincoln County, Dakota Territory. In May, 1882, he located on a farm in Canton Township. Which they conducted for 5 years, moving into Canton, in 1887.
