"Benning Smart Straw was born June 10, 1815 near New London, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, and died February 13, 1898; aged 82 years, 8 months and 3 days.
When five years old his parents moved to Ohio. Being deprived of hearing from infancy, he was educated at the school for the deaf, Columbus, Ohio. He was married September 4, 1851 to Miss Mary A. Henry, (hearing) who departed this life September 8, 1869. To them was born one daughter. In 1865 he moved from Crawford County to Williams County, where he lived on the same farm until his death. March 26, 1872 he was married to Mrs. Mary F. Smith (mute) of Cleveland, Ohio, who died October 29, 1888. At the age of 37 he embraced religion and joined the Lutheran church, remaining a faithful member until God called him home."

William S. Smith was a Hartford pupil admitted in 1825 age15. Had 2 brothers born deaf and one deaf sister by Hartford reports. Married Mary F. Bean but never had any children. Mrs Smith adopted a child Mary Ann, hearing, b. 15 March 1859 and died 21 June 1866.
