obit Goffstown News, The (NH) - Thursday, May 20, 2010 Deceased Name: Alice C. Straw WEARE - Alice C. Straw, 87, died Dec. 15, 2009, after a period of declining health. Born in North Woodstock, the daughter of Alston A. and Eudora B. (Carter) Straw, she grew up in Bedford, Mass., and graduated from Lexington High School. She graduated from the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. After beginning her career as a nursing instructor and staff nurse, she furthered her education at Boston University and became the director of nursing services at Mary Hitchcock. After retiring from Mary Hitchcock, she worked several years as an elementary school nurse in Lebanon. She enjoyed fishing, hiking, bird watching and baseball. She was an avid Red Sox fan who delighted in telling people that she had seen Babe Ruth play in Boston. She was predeceased by her brother, Oscar A. Straw, who died Dec. 13, 2009, and her lifelong friend, Caroline Shearman, who died in 2005. Family members include a sister-in-law, Elizabeth P. Straw of Weare; a nephew, William A. Straw, and family; a niece, Alice S. Thomson, and family; several cousins; and dear friends Anne and Eugene Dauphinais of Lebanon. Committal services with military honors for Alice C. Straw and her brother, Oscar, 92, took place at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Weare. French and Rising Funeral Home in Goffstown handled arrangements.
