November 20, 1919 - June 10, 2011 F. W. "Jack" Straw, 91, retired Gatesville Banker and Civic Leader, passed away Friday, June 10, 2011. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. June 15, at First Baptist Church of Gatesville with Dr. Steve Dominy officiating. A private family burial will be at Restland Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Gatesville Funeral Home.
Mr. Straw was born in Gatesville Nov. 20, 1919, the oldest of three sons of Fenno Warren Straw Sr. and Vivian Sutton Straw. His father was a Gatesville bank officer. After graduating from Gatesville High School, Mr. Straw attended the University of Texas personid for three years before volunteering for service in the U. S. Air Force in November of 1941, shortly before Pearl Harbor. He was commissioned after completing Officers Candidate School at Harvard University..
His military career included two years of duty in Europe during World War II. He retired from the Air Force in December of 1945, with the rank of major. In January of 1946, Mr. Straw resumed his work as a bookkeeper with the National Bank of Gatesville. It was June 15 of that year that he married Charlie Francis Williams. She died Feb. 27, 2005. Mr. Straw's career was marked by steady promotions in the National Bank. He was elected assistant cashier in 1949 and was made cashier in 1960, a director in 1964, vice president and cashier in 1971, executive vice president in 1975, president in 1979, and CEO and chairman of the board in 1982. He retired as CEO in 1984 and as board chairman in 2002.
He was a past chairman of the 4th District of the Texas Bankers Association. Mr. Straw also served on the association's board of directors and as chairman of its Retirement System Committee. He was also past chairman of the Central Texas Conference, Bank Administration Institute.
On the civic front, Mr. Straw had been a member of Coryell Memorial Hospital's board of trustees and treasurer of the hospital's Foundation since 1977. He was a past president of both the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce and the Gatesville Lions Club. He had served as chairman of the city's Planning and Zoning Commission and vice chairman of the Housing Authority. Mr. Straw was also a past vice president of the Heart O' Texas Council, Boy Scouts of America. He earned recognition as Gatesville's Citizen of the Year in 2001. A past master of Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 197, he was also a past district deputy grand master of the Masons' Grand Lodge of Texas. Mr. Straw, a member of the First Baptist Church for more than 70 years, served for much of that time as an usher and a Sunday School class officer.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and one brother, Dr. Harry G. Straw.Survivors are a brother, Henry F. Straw and wife, Margaret of Burnet; and a number of nieces and nephews.
