bullet  General Notes:

Rose first married Daniel Beswick. They made their home in Vermont. Daniel died young in 1904 of TB.Rose had one child by him, a daughter named Mildred. Rose then married Clarence Burns and two children were born to them; a son Roger and a daughter Florence Alta hereafter known by the family as Alta. Rose worked in the laundry at the Chester House located on the Four Corners in the village of Chester. This marriage ended in divorce and Rose married for a third time to Benjamin Starbuck. They had one son George.
Rose and her husband Ben owned and operated a home restaurant (located in the present Chester Diner next to McNeill's garage on Main St). Ben also ran a gas station located at the Four Corners. It was owned by Walter Wertime and leased out. Later Vincent Place Sr. leased it and ran a Taxi stand and gas station.
Sometime later Ben and Rose owned and operated a filling (gas) station across from the old Chestertown Central School building on lower Main St heading south out of the village. When I (Jane O'Connor Foster) was in grade school it was the local hangout of the students. The older high school boys would go and congregate at a table inside near the stove and drink coca cola. The grade school students were allowed to cross the street at recess time to buy penny candy displayed in a glass case and carefully and patiently doled out in small paper sacks by Rose. Not every child was permitted to cross the road to the gas station and so an older child would collect everyone's money and a list that had to be memorized.... never written down. It was not uncommon to see a whole line of small faces lined up near the edge of the playground awaiting the return of the older child with an armful of small paper sacks of candy. This was a daily ritual at recess time and a rite of passage when you became old enough to cross the street.
