The Johnson Family of Hardin County on Gen Circles
The following is a transcribed letter from Mattie to her husband Charles, who is out of touch and in Mexico working for the Marion Power Shovel Co. "My dear and loving husband, I received your welcome letter from only [could not read] once more. This has been a pleasant day with the exception of a cool wind. We have had company all day. This morning while we were eating breakfast, Manda and Tally came and stayed after twelve. Then Manda barks came and after her, Clara Snider and Bassin Louis, then Mag and Alice Walters. And this evening Pett was over, and Gus Jones was in today too. So you can see how we passed the day. We had quite an accident this week. Ear came up to play with Bernard and I told them to play in the back yard but they wandered over where the Jones lived in that cottage, and the flood had taken off the top of the cistern and Bernard fell in. The cistern was almost full of water. He happened to catch to the edge, just a hand hold left. Grace had just come home from school and gone to the privy. She heard him scream and instead of coming for me, she ran and helped him out her self, then came running ahead and said "Oh mamma, Bernard fell into the cistern and I just got there in time to save him" I think she is getting to be quite a "Heroine" don't you? Or he might be dead by this time. Eva is sitting up a little while. She wants to be able to go to Jim's, week from today, if she can. Claude was sick all last night. I did not take off my clothes until two o'clock in the morning. I felt so sorry for the poor little fellow. He would say all day yesterday when he would pull his ears; "hurts". He can say hurts real plain. Jeannie and Jim and Dell were there yesterday afternoon. Well, I can think of nothing more to say. I am going to bed now. If it is late and I have not went to bed since you went away until ten and after very night. So good bye....be careful and write often to your anxious wife. Mattie Straw Marion Ohio A kiss to you
