NEWPORT --- Mark H. Taylor, 95, father of Dr. H. Lewis Taylor, died May 20 in Dexter.
He was born in Harbor Grace, Nfld., March 6, 1883, son of Joshua Lewis and Mary (Nichol) Taylor. He came to Lisbon Falls with his parents in 1889 and was naturalized in 1904. He was a graduate of Lisbon Falls High School and the Bliss Business College of Lewiston. In 1905 he married Iva Etta Ordway of Lisbon Center. They lived in Lewiston, where he worked for the Lewiston Journal as assistant advertising manager for several years and for the Federal Casualty Co.
In 1911, they moved to Berlin, N.H., where he was an officer of the Berlin National Bank for more than 20 years. He was active in the business and social life of the city, having been president of the YMCA for 10 years and treasurer of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Berlin Athletic
Association. He was Berlin city treasurer and later treasurer of Coos County
for 12 years.
He was a 50-year member of Sabatis Lodge, AF and AM of Berlin; a member of Mount Hayes Royal Arch Chapter, council of Colebrook; North Star Knights Templar of Lancaster; and Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord, N.H. He was also a member of the Berlin Lodge of Elks and the Rotary Club. He moved in April of 1935 to Newport to become treasurer of Newport Trust Co., where he remained until his retirement in 1956. Besides being a director of the bank, he served as secretary of the board of directors from 1951 through 1972.
He was a charter member of the Newport Kiwanis Club and a member of Nokomis Chapter, OES. He and Mrs. Taylor, who died in 1967, were members of the Newport Methodist Church, where he was church treasurer for 11 years.
Surviving in addition to Dr. Taylor of Dexter, are four sons, Wesley 0. Taylor, Augusta, Arthur R. Taylor, Nashua, N.H.; Mark A. Taylor, Somersworth, N.H.; william C. Taylor, Newport; (another son, Donald C. Taylor, predeceased his father); a sister, Mrs. Maude Kassay, Gardiner; two brothers, Arthur W. Taylor and Douglas Taylor, both of Lisbon Falls; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were May 22 at Crosby Funeral Home, Newport, with the Rev. Homer Hughey officiating. Interment was in the Hillside Cemetery, Lisbon Falls.
