Captain John Marshall Phillips of Maplewood, Ma died at his home on June 20th...born Taunton, MA 1829 went to sea at early age, his father being a ship owner...made voyages to the West Indies before he was 21..came around Cape Horn to California in 1849 in the brig commandered by his uncle Captain Burt (the) TRIUMPH...spent 2 yrs in the mines and ret'd home to go into coasting trade and managed many fine vessels....

John married Metta Frances Hubbard, daughter of Dr Joseph Hubbard and Ann Medora Straw, on 22 Nov 1893 in Malden (Maplewood) Massachusetts. (Metta Frances Hubbard was born on 9 May 1855 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts and died after 1921.)
