Notes by Marjorie Ann Souder. "John Hiram Swayze was born May 4, 1816, in Warren County, New Jersey and died at Coggon, Iowa, June 1st, 1896, at 12:20 p. m. At the age of sixteen Mr. Swayze with his parents moved to New York State, but remained there only a year when they moved to Ohio. When twenty years old he left his Ohio home for a visit in Oakland, Michigan, and being well pleased with the place, he settled there. At the age of twenty-seven he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Ann Jeanett Dewey, by Rev. Suply P. Chase, a Baptist minister at Rochester, Michigan. In 1856, he, with his wife and four children, settled in Jones County, Iowa. Linn County was their next home, and then Buchanan County where they lived 12 years. In 1877 he moved back to Linn county, where he resided on his farm until 3 years ago when he and his wife came to Coggon, where he spent the evening of his life. Eight children were born to this couple, six of whom survive him: Green Swayze of Elkhorn, Nebraska, who was not able to be at the funeral. The remaining five are Seeman Swayze of Lake Park, Iowa, Mrs. T. J. Bishop of Coggon, Mrs. Frank Guy of Waterloo, Nebraska, Marshall Swayze of Ocheyedan, Iowa, and Mrs. Wm. Webb of Coggon. . . . The Funeral was held in the Church of Christ Wednesday fore noon. The remains were laid to rest in the Coggon Cemetery." "Typewritten copy of the obituary of John Hiram Swayze," Clyde W.
