Daniel Felch Straw was born on a farm in Hopkinton, NH. and spent his life up to age 23 as a farmer. He then went to Manchester, NH and was engaged in the retail grocery business with his brother Monroe J. (James Monroe). After this he went into the jewelry business. (Stearns)

Straw being one of 3 newly elected directors [1868] of the Amoskeag Bank in Manchester, NH that was incorporated in 1848. A previously elected director was Ezekiel A. Strraw who later became governor.
