Hartley, a former Nebraska City resident and a former chief US Marshall for Nebraska, was killed in a traffic accident in NYS 16 May 1988.
...Hartley and his wife, Mary Ann, were returning Monday to Omaha from New York, where they had visited one of their sons, David of Fort Devon, MA, when they encountered heavy rain and hail on a highway east of Buffalo, NY. After the storm Hartley drove the car back onto the hwy and it was struck by another vehicle...The couple was taken to a nearby hospital where he died during surgery. Mrs. Hartley was injured but returned to Omaha Wednesday.
Hartley left the #2 job in the marshal's office in March of 1986 due to a mandatory retirement rule. He spent 26yrs with the marshal's service after one year with the Nebraska State Patrol and 3 yrs in counterintelligence for the US Army.
...born 18 Feb 1931, Nebraska City...s/o Frank and Edith Ertl Hartley...married 26 April 1963...Omaha...Mary Ann Douda...graduated 1949 St. Bernard's Academy...attended Creighton Univ. in Omaha.
Survivors: wife; sons David and Daniel of Phoenix, AZ; daughter Carol; mother; brothers Charles W. and Robert; sisters Lois Harris; Betty Hartley and Sharlette Wadsworth of Nehawka. Preceded in death by his father.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery in Omaha
