Per S. Phaneuf: When he was a young boy Charles signed on board a whaling ship for several years. He was a farmer by trade and his wife Phoebe was a tailoress, making men's clothing.

They are also recorded in the Henniker 1850 census with a Hiram Straw who may have been a relation to Phebe. Hiram is described in the Henniker sheets as an idiot pauper.
