James A.Gregg fought with the Union Army. He enlisted 16 aug 1862 from Albany, NY with service from 1862-65 in Union Army 43rd Infantry Company D, G, K NY; rank Sgt . He fought in the Battle of the Wilderness and was captured and sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia.He was exchanged at Big Balck Ridge, Mississippi. (Prisoner Exchange on 1 April 1865). He is buried in Genesco,Kansas. Allen gives his POB as Acworth, NH and states James married first to Ester (LNU), born 1839 and died 1918 in Genesco, Rice County, Kansas.Cause of death: paralysis of the stomach.
In 1880 he was a saloon keeper in Bennington, VT
