Joseph L. was educated as a civil engineer, in which capacity he served with ability on the Fitchburg Railroad and on the Northern Railroad while they were building. He also once made a survey through the forests of Maine, from the Atlantic to the St. Lawrence. For some years he was employed on Southern Railroads. He was assassinated at Jacksonville, Florida, in 1859, by a young man who exclaimed, after he had fired the fatal shot: "I have shot my best friend." He was respected and beloved by all they knew him. "He was a noble son, a kind and indulgent husband and father, and an affectionate brother."
