- Melvin Burt, 91, longtime resident of Fair Play, died Saturday, September 11, 2004, at Windsor Healthcare and Rehab Center, following a short illness. He was born June 1, 1913, in Stafford County, Kansas, to Jeff Milton and Mary Belle (Smith) Burt. On November 9, 1938, he married Hazel Florence Manuel. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Mt. Zion and was also a member of the Bolivar Masonic Lodge and the UAW. He had been a millwright in the automobile manufacturing industry. He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Hazel, of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ronald Burt of Windsor and Dwight and Terri Burt of Kansas city; two daughters and son-in-law, Pamela and Mike Harris of Fair Play and Fonda Burt of Springfield; two brothers and sister-in-law, Orbin Burt of Oak Grove and Gordon and Eleanor Burt of Kansas City; four sisters, Vivian Manuel of Clinton, Persis Beldin of Ft. Worth, Texas, Betty Gregory of Deepwater, and Bernice Straw of Parsons, Kansas; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Vicki Harris, two brothers and four sisters. Funeral services with Masonic Rights will be held Wednesday, September 15, 11 a.m. at Pitts Chapel with Pastor Michael Burt officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Aldrich.
