Cross passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 24, 2011 in Spokane, WA, surrounded by her family. She was 80.
She was born to Elsie and Marion C. Purington on Oct. 1, 1930 in Weare, NH. She was raised there, graduating from Weare High School in 1948, and receiving her nursing degree from Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in 1951.
In 1967, she moved to Missoula, MT, with her first husband, Warren E. Thamarus, Jr. and their four children. Moving to Montana was like coming home for Marietta, and she had many adventures under western skies. She enjoyed skiing, hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping with her family. She was a member of the Missoula Trap and Skeet Club, and also participated in English Springer Spaniel field trials with her dog "Checkerboom Jake."
In September of 1975 she married George W. Cross, and they established their home in Missoula. She had been working at Community Medical Center (CMC) for two years, and with George by her side, she continued to dedicate herself to maternal-child health care in Montana. She became the obstetrics nursing supervisor in 1976 and was instrumental in developing the first neonatal intensive care unit for Montana at CMC.
She was involved in the program "Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies," the Montana Council for Maternal and Child Health, and the March of Dimes. She was a founding member of the Montana Perinatal Association, and a leader for CMC in Maternal Child Health Education outreach. She served as chairwoman of the Governor's Council for the MIAMI Project (Montana Initiative for the Abatement of Mortality in Infants).
Marietta also helped establish the Rocky Mountain Childbirth conference and recently attended the 20th annual meeting. She believed that there was "so much you could do" to promote prenatal care and education, and her career was a shining example of that belief.
Marietta and George retired to the Orofino area in November 1992. They shared an active retirement, participating in the North Idaho Senior Games as well as other events around the country. She received medals in the long jump, trap shooting, shot-put, and discus. She loved all types of music, and was active with the Orofino Dance Club.
She also enjoyed reading, walking her dogs, and driving anywhere, which she often did to visit family and friends around the country.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Elsie Purington; her brother Malcolm C. Purington; brother-in-law Oscar Straw; daughter Debra Cross and an infant son.
Survivors include her husband George; sister Elizabeth Straw; sister-in-law June Purington; children Donovan Cross, Karen Thamarus, Michael Thamarus, Carla Cross, Susan Horstmann (Mark), and Mary Meyer (Carter); grandchildren Barbie Cross, Chani Dupuis, Dylan Cross, Joshua Cross, Stephanie Horstmann, Steven Horstmann, Carl Meyer, and Cassie Meyer; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Marietta will be missed by all of us, a void never to be filled. We will always be grateful for her compassion, wisdom, and strength. She will live in our hearts forever.
A memorial service for Marietta will be held in Missoula, MT later in the spring.
Memorial donations may be made in Marietta's name to: Community Medical Center Foundation, 2827 Fort Missoula Road, Missoula, MT 59804; Clearwater Valley Hospital and Clinic, 301 Cedar, Orofino, Idaho 83544 and your local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Pine Hills Funeral Chapel is in care of arrangements.
