" I was searching on any information on my grand father: Charles Melvin Brown Born: Feb 2, 1881 Birth place possibly: Bradford County, PA Died: Dec. 1970 St. Clair County, MI I was very surprised when I found him located on the following website: <http://www.straw.ws/jao/pub/jao/20911.htm> Image my surprise to know that he had been married twice. No one in my family I know of knew. The following is information of bits and pieces: Charles Melvin Brown who according to United States, WWII Draft Registration Cards, 1942: Melvin Charles Brown Born: Feb. 2, 1881 Lime? Hill, PA Residence: Port Huron, St. Clair County With Third Wife: Norma Brown (Not my Grandmother) _________________________________________________ Hannah Rittie Wells, Brown was my grandmother My father was Harvey E Brown Born: 1921 Location of Birth: Port Huron, St. Clair County, MI, USA It looks like Charles Melvin Brown went to PA, USA after the death of his first wife Clara Mary Allen, Brown. For it was in PA, USA that he met my grandmother Hannah Rittie Wells, Brown and then the family came to St. Clair County, MI which would make sense if he already had family here. _________________________________________________ Charles Melvin Brown said he was adopted that his surname might have been Bennett. He said also, to that he was Native American/Mixed. It is possible he was taken from Bradford County, PA, USA and sent to an orphanage in VA, USA where he was adopted out. Maybe, I'm thinking he might have came on the orphan train to Saginaw, MI where he was adopted by William Brown and Margaret Appley, Brown. __________________________________________________ My grandfather is a mystery because he never told my dad that he had another family, because my dad thought he was my grandfather's only biological son. Which, it looks like is not the case. Please, feel free to e-mail me of any information in the mystery of my grandfather. Thank you. Sincerely, Margaret (Brown) Kelch [e-mail 120411]
Thnak you ever so much for e-mailing me back. Charles Melvin Brown my grandfather truly is a mystery. Here is a piece of information I think is on him: Taken from: MI, State Census Collection 1827-1894 Charles Brown 13 years of age Census 1894 Born: 1881 Port Huron , MI My question is why would a 13 year old boy be on his own? Charles Melvin Brown being born in Bradford County, PA Why would he bring his wife Hannah Rittie Wells, Brown and her children to Port Huron, MI in 1920 with his wife being with child? Cause, my father Harvey E Brown was born in St. Clair County, MI in Feb. 1921. Also why would a 35 year Charles Brown: Born in 1874 marry a teenager? My graandpa Charles Melvin Brown was born in Feb. 2, 1881 he makes more sense. He would be a teenager himself at that time. A question I now have is my dad, Harvey E. Brown my grandpa Charles' only son or not? Another questions is: Who were the biological parents of grandpa Charles? I know that he liked Native American ways and he could fish and hunt like he was naturally born to it. Also, I remember on the rare times I seen him as a five year old or so that he had an Native American beaded belt that he told us told the story of his culture. two. I feel bad that grandpa's side of the family is so unknown. Somewhere there is answers. I believe you are right the two Charles Brown's are two different people and yet both had a MI background. Is there a connection? I am beginning to think there is something, but what? Sincerely, Margaret (Brown) Kelch
