ELLEN CULVER KENNEDY MEMOIRS - 1928
"Charlotte married Horace D. Clark April 9, 1867 at Hopkinton Iowa and lived at the home place until they went to Nebraska in a covered wagon. They stopped at Beatrice Neb for a while and he worked at his trade as blacksmith. He did all kinds of smith work for the new settlers. He even made 'kinking irons' for the ladies. He filed on 160 acres of land where a part of Fairbury now stands. They built a log house and blacksmith shop near the Little Blue River and settled down to frontier life. I believe they had to go to Brownsville for all lumber. The Indians never gave them any trouble, but there were rumors of an uprising. . . . They had a part in the social activities of the community. That is Charlotte had, but one could not drag Horace into social affairs. Charlotte was prominent in their Lyceum's activity."
