[Research on www.rootsweb.com of Cynthis Stanley - 6 Oct 2004]
"I recently saw the family bible of Gaius & Hannah Howell at an antique shop in a small town in northern Michigan, in Rapid City, MI. Genealogy being my hobby, I asked if I could copy some of the information down. Here are some highlights:
Gaius Howell and Hannah Hall were married 9 Nov. 1794. (no place given). He was born 25 May 1770, Hannah was born 13 Dec 1773. Some other relatives mentioned (assumed to be their children) Harriet b. 1795, Daniel b 1797, Jacob W. b 1800, Chilion B. b 1802, Elias P. b 1805, Manlon or Mahon F. b 1810, Caroline Julian b 1812, Jane b 1815. (I believe complete birth dates were written, but I wrote only the year in my notes.)
There were also some handwritten notes and newspaper clippings stuffed in it, one from a Detroit newspaper on one of the Howell relatives. I believe that there were handwritten ancestors of Gaius written that went back to the late 1500's, though I don't remember seeing places given. It was a true "find" and I wanted to let someone from their line know about it!
I checked Rootsweb for these people and found your page on Gaius and recognized some of the names. I have nothing to gain by letting you know this. I just know it was one of those treasures that was lost to the original family - and that bothered me!
The antique shop is housed in a huge rambling old house, with every room and three stories (if you include the attic) where antique treasures and trash are everywhere, including spilling out on the lawn. The man I talked to is a rather gruff, older man, unfamiliar with the computer and internet. His name was Don Hubbel. The antique shop was called Millers Antiques, the phone number (231) 331-6104.
Good Luck!
