MOSES and HANNAH BARNARD were descendants of one Isaac Barnard, who came to America during the later part of the seventeenth century, and settled in or near Amesbury, Massachusetts; his children settled around him; one of them, Tristam, reared a large family of children who settled in Weare about 1790; their neighborhood is still called "Barnard hill;" their names were Isaac, David, Edmund, John, Tristam, Hannah, Mary, and Jerusha. John purchased a farm in Weare, but died in Amesbury 1795, before removing to Weare, leaving a widow, whose name was Dorothy Currier, and eight children, viz: Jerusha, Polly, Dorothy, Moses, John, Miriam, Elephalet and Hannah.

In 1849 or 1850 it appears he and his brother John signed the following petition:
The petition reads as follows:
To John McConnell Esq. M.P.P. for the County of Stanstead.
Sir- The undersigned electors and inhabitants of the County of Stanstead, feeling that a great political change is necessary to the welfare and prosperity of this Province, and fully concurring in the principles set forth in the Montreal Manifesto, that a peaceful separation of the Colony from Great Britain, and a union with the United States, are the only means of relieving Canada from its present state of depression, respectfully request you to make public your sentiments and opinions upon this subject.
December 26, 1849, additional signatures January 3, 10, & 24, 1850.
