William E., youngest son of Philip and Louisa Scheerer Bever, was born in Naumburg, town of Croghan and married Lillian Gerene McFall, June 3, 1903.
His parents having retired from farming, he resided with them during their last days in the home located nearest the Evangelical church in Naumburg.
In his early life, he was employed in the Basselin mills, in Cas- torland.
In January 1898, he enlisted in the U. S. Army with the Ninth Infantry, Co. D., then located at Sacketts Harbor. He was one of the three young volunteers from Naumburg who engaged in the Spanish-American war and one of the two who were enabled to re- turn.
At the outbreak of the war, his infantry went to Tampa, Fla. After being stationed there for a time, they proceeded to Cuba, where he was engaged in the various skirmishes and expeditions with his company in the decisive action taken around Santiago de Cuba, near San Juan Hill and was present at the Spanish surrender of Santiago during the summer of 1898.
The war, being now closed, his infantry returned to Sacketts Harbor, where they remained till the spring of 1899.
Owing to the condition of his health his family requested that he be relieved and it was thro' the efforts of Hon. Chas. A. Chickering, of Copenhagen, in his application to Secretary of War, Elihu Root, that he was granted relief in March 1899, the day before the infantry departed for the struggle in the Philippines.
With the recovery of his health, he took up employment in the Basselin mill. In 1909 he sold his parental home to his sister, Carrie, and moved to the Hubbard house, located near the home of his par-ents-in-law, where he remained until June 1910, when he began farm- .ing on the Ridge Road and continued until the autumn of 1922, when he took up his residence in Castorland and became an employe in the feed mill of S. F. Virkler
