THETFORD CENTER — Florence E. Cummings, 93, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a period of failing health.
She was born May 11, 1907, in Corinth, the daughter of Henry J. and Rose (DeGosh) Hodge. She attended school in West Fairlee. She lived in White River Junction and West Fairlee before moving to Thetford 50 years ago. On May 18, 1925, she married Claude A. Cummings of Vershire. She worked 12 years at Don Orr's farm in Vershire and then started taking care of elderly people in their homes and later in her own home for over 33 years.
She is survived by two sons, Lawrence B. and Raymond H. Cummings, both of Thetford; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Claudie A. Cummings and Robert W. Cummings; three brothers, James Hodge, William Hodge, and George Hodge; four sisters, Margaret Avery, Inez Brown, Marietta Severance and Bertha Straw; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside memorial service was held Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 11:30 a.m. at the Post Mills Cemetery with the Rev. J. York Peeler of the Post Mills Congregational Church officiating. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, Main Street, Chelsea, was in charge of arrangements.
