was born in Linn County near Parker, Kan. the d/o Leslie Eugene and Mary Ethyl (Burnett) BottrellShe married James Robert Tyson in 1936 and they became the parents of three sons. She was schooled in art in Paola starting at age 15, and later continued classes at Ottawa Univeristy and art centers in Florida.
During her life she pursued oil painting on stretched canvas. Her paintings are owned by private collectors throughout the country; are shown in the American Hereford Journal Building in Kansas City; and are owned by cattlemen and ranchers in Kansas, as well as by family.
She exhibited in several places including the Plaza Art Fair and the Nelson Art Gallery. She produced her own arts fair at the family home near Parker. The fair outgrew the family ranch location and was moved to Mound City as the Sugar Mound Arts and Crafts Festival, where Avis became organizer and chairman for 13 years. She also taught art to many ladies of the surrounding communities.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, joining the four Winds Chapter in Garnett.
Avis was baptized in water at age 14 and in the spirit in 1972 and was a lifelong Christian. As a mother and Sunday school teacher she influenced her whole family and others.

Avis married James Robert Tyson, son of Robert Joseph Tyson and Blanche May Harrison, on 3 Jun 1936. (James Robert Tyson was born on 1 Sep 1913 in Linn County, Kansas, died on 23 Dec 2011 in Golden Heights Nursing Home in Garnett, Ks. and was buried in Goodrich Cemetery, Goodrich, Kansas.)
