He died on the Santa Fé Trail in Kansas from Cholera. He was on his way back to Santa Fe. On the trip were his grandson, don Eugenio Romero and a servant, Susano Layba. He was wrapped in a blanket and buried under coal with a barrel of whisky was poured over him. When the weather turned cold in 1855 his body was moved to Santa Fé for burial in the cemetery back of the San Miguel Church. A lengthy eulogy was printed in the Daily New Mexican upon his death. At his death he possessed a ranch at the Cerrillos valued at $5000. Later the property was assigned to Manuel's wife, María de la Luz Baca where it appeared in her will.
