JOSE RUIZ (2) DE VALDES (FRANCISCO RUIZ (1)) (Source: Fray Chavez, "Origins of New Mexico Families" by Fray Chavez & HGRC.) was born Abt. 1664 in Oviedo, Spain, and died in Zuni, New Mexico. He married MARIA HERNANDEZ DE MEDINA CABRERA on April 30, 1690 in the Cathedral of Mexico, Mexico City. She was the daughter of ALONSO DE MEDINA and JOSEFA DE CABRERA. She died January 23, 1731 in Santa Cruz de La Caņada, New Mexico.
In 1696 he was a sergeant at Santa Cruz.
The Valdes family was apparently among the founding settlers of La Villa Nueva de Santa Cruz in April 1695.

i. JOSE RUIZ (3) DE VALDES, b. 1691, Mexico City, New Spain.
ii. ANA VALDES, b. 1692; m. LAZARO ANTONIO CORDOVA, June 10, 1710, Santa Cruz De La Caņada, New Mexico.
iii. CATALINA VALDES, d. 1713; m. MIGUEL LUJAN.
Was known as La Prieta and was murdered by her husband
