The son of John D. Strew, Jr. and Hannah Lavina (Meagley) Strew, William Wallace Strew was likely named after his father's brother, Dr. William Wallace Strew of Oyster Bay, New York. On March 1st, 1880 William married Clara Belle Shumway in Schoolcraft, Michigan, becoming step-father to her young son Roy Allen Shumway, who would later adopt his step-father's surname. The marriage soon produced five children, beginning with May (born May 1st, 1881), Vivian L. (born August 1882), Bernard F. (born November 26th, 1885), an infant son who lived one day (born May 9th, 1889) and Floyd John (born June 13th, 1890.) After Clara Belle's untimely passing in 1903, William married for a second time, on December 20th, 1905 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Anna May (Munson) Lee, a union that produced a single child, daughter Thelma May, born early in 1907 just before the tragic passing of her young mother. William Wallace Strew would marry one final time, to Sarah Adelia (Lull) Woodward, on February 28th, 1909 in Schoolcraft, Michigan, where he remained with her until his death in 1921. The following obituary, transcribed verbatim, was published a few days after his death:
