OBITUARY
MRS. HATTIE LUSK STREW
One of the largest funerals assembled in Prairie Ronde for many years gathered on Tuesday afternoon, the 25th inst. to honor the memory of Mrs. Hattie Lusk Strew and give kindly comfort to a bereaved husband and family. It was hardly realized until the death of the deceased how large a circle of friends she had drawn intimately around her.
Mrs. Strew, whose maiden name was Hattie M. Lusk, was born near Union City, Branch County, Michigan. While still a young girl, she moved with her parents to Prairie Ronde, where she was married December 13, 1885 to John Strew. For the greater part of the nine years of her married life, she and her husband have lived at the old homestead, belonging to her husband's family.
It is difficult to state more than the truth, and yet enough to say that hers was a disposition particularly happy. While yet a girl, she was recognized as a leader in the company of associates among whom she moved. Her married life, which has been spent in a large family, has been but the fulfillment of earlier promises. She manifested no disposition to receive favors or enjoy the patronage of her friends without returning theirs with additional sunshine from her own heart. Here was her secret. None came in touch with this life, now gone out, without respecting, admiring or loving. The proofs are found in the unusually large number of friends who gathered with her immediate relatives to perform for her this last possible service.
For some months she seemed to have an apprehension that her life would be spared but little longer. This she frequently mentioned to a friend, and while she had never openly professed a Christian faith, she now began prayerfully to consider this question. It was just a short time before her death, while a lady was watching with her at night, that she spoke of the end and wished to be fully prepared when it came. A few nights later she said to the same friend, "It is all right now. I would rather live to rear my family, but if God wants me to go I am ready." We cannot question the providence that leaves her young husband bereaved with three small children. It is quite all that can be said to gather our emotion in that last, well-chosen phrase and say, it is all right. Diseases united to compass her death. She had suffered for a year with an affection of the heart while hepatic diseases were the more immediate cause of her death. She died Sunday evening, September 23. In posing we might note the strange coincidence, that she was born, married and died on the Sabbath. The funeral was held at the Pleasant Valley church, Mr. A. T. Howard, an old friend of the family, conducting the services. A.T.H.
