DEVEREAUX, Hugh Matthew - 75
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, May 7, 2013
(1937-2013)
Halifax
passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at home, surrounded by family. Born in Spanish Room Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Patrick and Elizabeth (Molloy) Devereaux. Hugh left Newfoundland at the age of 16 and came to Halifax; he always enjoyed his return trips home to Newfoundland. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Armdale Branch, for many years. He worked for Sears for 37 years retiring in 1992. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved spending time at fishing and hunting camps. He also enjoyed doing any kind of labour work, especially carpentry, for family and friends; he was always there to lend a hand. Hugh was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to many, who will be dearly missed.
He will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 55 years, Virginia (Marriott); daughter, Fay (Vernon) Comeau; grandchildren, Travis and Alissa Comeau, all of Halifax; brothers, Eugene, Newfoundland; George and Clarence, both of Ontario; sisters, Isabel, Mary Ann, Hilda, Ida and Cathy, all of Newfoundland; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by daughter, Colleen; brothers, Vincent, Patrick Jr. and Eddie; sister, Leona as well as 8 siblings in infancy.
Special thanks are extended to the Palliative Care Home Team especially, Glenna Thornhill; the VON and Northwood Homecare; also, many thanks to family and friends who gave so much support to the family during the last 5 months.
Arrangements are under the care of J. A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax (477-5601), where visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 8 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 9 at 10 AM in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Fr. Pitcher as celebrant; reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Donations in Hugh's memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, 7A VG site, QEII or to a charity of one's choice.
