Respectfully yours, John E. Mills [son] [April 1865 when he was appointed 2nd Lt, he stated he was born in Ireland 21 Mar 1790] There is a copy of his "Oath of Office". He served over 45 yrs in the army. also: Head Quarters 1st Infantry New Orleans, LA Mar 21- 1865 [to] the Adjutant General, US Army, Washington, DC Sir, I have the honor to recommend to the Secretary Of War, Principal Musician, John Mills, 1st Infantry, for the appointment of 2nd Lt. Sergeant Mills entered the army, I think, in 1808, and is now serving in his thirteenth enlistment. He was in the Battle of "Lundy's Lane" and was surrounded with the 4th Infantry in Detroit by Gen Hull in 1812. He entered the army before I was born and was a fifer in the 4th Infantry when I entered it thirty-five years ago. He is now 73 years of age and if appointed, as I sincerely hope he may be, he would be placed on the "Retired List" and be allowed to spend the remainder of his days in peace and comfort. I am Sir respectfully your obedient servant. Robert C. Buchanan, Col 1st Infantry. Sgt Mills is at present on furlough at Haverhill, MA. and also "Nathaniel Hatch, Town Clerk of Bradford, MA State of Massachusetts, county of Essex, Town of Bradford. Lt. John Mills, son of Edward and Catherine Mills, died the twenty-first day of June, A. D. eighteen hundred and sixty-seven of apoplexy, age 77."
