bullet  General Notes:

Name per Barb Clarine via e-mail 6 Aug 2000 - "I have a book in my posession called "A Corner In Ancestors:Odell Family." It had belonged to my grandmother Eleanor Robinson Weddel. In this book the lineage of the Robinsons are listed from Jacob Robinson in Wales and shows descendancy 6 generations. My grandmother and her sister are the last ones mentioned as children. A few pages later it shows the following:
GRANT
Susan Coffin of England married a man by the name of STRAW. Betsey Straw her daughter, married Silas GRANT. She had the following brothers and sisters: David, Simeon, Valentine, Sally, Polly and Susan. Sally married Robert Parcher, Waterbury, Vermont. Polly and Susan married two brothers, Israel and Peter Smith, Waterborough, Maine, five miles from Alfred County seat. Betsey STRAW, born May 20th 1784, married Silas Grant of Lyman, Maine; moved to Ripley, Maine. Children: Mary 1803; Orin 1804; Hiram 1805; Susan 6 Sept 1807, married Cyrus Spaulding (my great great great grandfather); Wealthy born 11 July 1809, married William Bryde/Bowdoin; Lydia born 10 May 1811, married Bradbury Lovell, Cambridge, Maine; John born 15 Jan 1813; Royal born 22 Dec 1814; Esther 1816; Samuel born 9 May 1818; Jacob born 4 April 1820; Lizza born July 1822, married John Rogers, Springfield, MA and Melissa born July 1824.
Alexander Grant came from Scotland and had two brothers, Daniel and Foss. Alexander's children were James, Silas of Lyman, Maine, Hipseyboth (married a Goodwin) and Daniel."

Per Hope Cem records in Waterbury, VT.

Valentine married for second wife Almira Pike and they had a son named Lyman T(urner). Straw born 1833 in VT who married Almira E. Preston in 1857 in NY. Almira Preston was born 1837 the d/o Joasiel Jr. Preston and Jemima Pike and died 1898. Lyman and Almira had a daughter named Elizabeth A. Straw born 1865 in NY and she married Adam Brown in 1887 in NY. She died 1934 in NY.

census 1830 shows Valentine living in nearby Duxbury, VT, a proximal community to Waterbury, VT. Based on the age this is Valentine Jr. (Eunice died in Aug of 1830 and may have been alive at time of census. Census not dated.) Valentine Straw HOH
1 male 1810-1815 [Truman Murray]
1 male 1770-1780 [Valentine]
1 female 1815-1820 [Frances A.]
1 female 1780-1790 [Eunice]
[probable son Laban married in 1828; Truman (at age 19) died until after this census and may never have married and Asahel may have relocated to NH as he married there in 1834]

On 14 April 1835 there was a land transaction between Valentine Straw and Leander Hutchins. (deed recorded in book 7 pg 231)

Valentine Jr also had a son named Asahel/Ashel or Azeal who settled in Contacook, NH near Hopkinton, NH. Asahel named twin sons Gilman and Truman (per census 1850 of Hillsboro, NH). In her genealogy of 1897 Ellen Straw Thompson claims Asahel was from Vermont. Valentine Jr Straw and his first wife Eunice married 1807 and she did not die until 1830 so marriage was at least 23 yrs in duration. It is possible that there was one more son who was in Duxbury, Vt in the 1830s.... Laban who married 1828 in Duxbury and a daughter Mary who married 1833 in Duxbury to Samuel Atherton. I have been unable to find Laban again in any census or other source on the Internet. This is not a common name and would be rather easy to research. He may have died early in life or at least prior to the 1850 census which gives names in the household.
