THIS IS A HAND WRITTEN PAGE COPIED DOWN IN WINNIFRED VIVIAN STRAW'S HANDWRITING: Ashley Straw (1900) has been a Rock County resident for the past 11 years & is engaged in farming the NW quarter of Sec. 12 Mound Inskip TOWNSHIP. A native of Vermont was born in West Bolton (?) , Chettenden County Aug 26 1864. He was the son of Cyrus (STRAW) and Sally Sterns Straw. (ALTERNATE IN TREE "STEARNS") Both of whom were born in New Hampshire. Cyrus died Apr 28, 1892. Sally died in Jasper. Both Straw & Sterns family were of Scottish & Irish Decent. Ashley was 10 yeas of age when departed New England with his parents who were determined to establish a new home in the west. The family on a farm in Taylor County Iowa. There he grew to manhood. He left home in 1884 to seek his own fortune & for 11 years thereafter was a South Dakota famer residing for different periods of time in counties of Beadle, Clark & Kingsburg. For 3 years following 1895 Mr. Straw farmed Otter Tail & Todd Counties, Minn. The summer after leaving that region was spent at Garretson So. Dakota The first year in Rock County in 1900 he worked (obscure word) ...orchs...(?) in Rose Dell tnship then 2 years a resident of Lunerne (spelling ?) & was employed as an elevator - and later as a brick layer. Mr Straw live on a rented farm & lived since 1903 In Clark County SD. Feb, 19 - 1890 He married Christine Redl. Clara was born in Canada. One of Lulu's parents was Canadian so this may have had something to do with their settling there. Family property perhaps. Anyway, Lulu supposedly died in Canada and Ashley moved back to the U.S. A distant cousin told me recently that Ashley married for a third time to Ann (last name presently unknown). LDS research shows an Ashley Straw who m Christina REDDI 19 Feb 1891 in Clark, SD; Wendy O'Neal the great great grand daughter gives the following information: "Ashley Straw b 1864, d 5-30-1946 was my Great Great Grandfather. Ashley was married to Christine Redi or Riddle not sure which. They had a daughter Margaret (Mae) Straw Lackie. She was my Great Grandmother. When Christine died he married Lula Beers. I think Grandma had some sister's and brothers but not sure if they were full or half. There was a Lil, Bob, Carolyn, Ed, Vinal I think Vinal was a cousin, Abbie. My Grandmother keeps a book with birthdays, deaths and special occasions. I have names but no connection to who they belong. If you have any info I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. obituary notes 30 May 1946- survived by widow; two daughters: Mrs Clara Derby of Sioux City and Mrs May Lackie of Sanborn, MN; a son Ralph in California; a sister Mrs Ada Tait of Martinez, CA; two borthers: George of Pipestone, MN and Anthon (Anson) in MO and 6 grandchildren

Ashley next married Anna Barbara Kasparek, daughter of Joseph Kasparek and Barbara Prokop, after 1940. (Anna Barbara Kasparek was born on 6 Jun 1870 in Nebraska, died on 15 Mar 1955 in Iowa and was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.)
