Gwen Rawlings Barry, A HISTORY OF MEGANTIC COUNTY, Downhomers of Quebec's Eastern Townships, Evans Books, 1999, pp. 45-51. (translated from French to English)
The colonization of the canton of Ireland begins in the hamlet from Mable Grove with the arrival from the captain Amos Hall, originating in Massachussetts and old bodyguard of the first president of the United States, George Washington. In 1804, Amos Hall starts from Compton, in Canton-of-the Is, to arrive at the lake at Trout. It delimits a site on which will be built, in 1839, the church Anglican Holy Trinity, rebuilt in 1900. Amos Hall settles definitively in 1807 with his wife, Martha Straw, and its eleven children. In the cemetery methodist of Mable Grove, close to the Dinning bridge, you can still see the tomb stone of the wife of Hall. Located with the crossing of the ways Craig and Gosford, the municipality of Ireland profited, throughout century, its situation of economic crossroads and communication which the presence of the two ways got to him on its territory.

Capitaine Amos Hall was the first settler in Megantic County. In 1804 he settled in the Township of Ireland. He was born in 1758 in Salem, Mass. He married Martha Straw in 1782. Amos Hall first came to Ireland Township in the summer of 1804 with his companion Demon. They left Hall's land in Shipton Township and traveled to Ireland on a hunting expedition to Trout Lake, where they built a small camp. On this visit, he drove a stake into the ground on the site of what later became Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Maple Grove and another stake at the bottom of the hill, declaring "between these two stakes I intend to live and die." In 1807, after returning many times with his son, walking fifty miles through virgin forests inhabited with wild animals and Indians, he settled permanently with his wife and 11 children.

Looking for the parents of one Sarah Anne HALL, born 9/1821 in Sherbrooke or close-by Eastern Township, d:4/2/1875 in Hopkinton, NH . She married Hiram Abiff AMSDEN of Sherbrooke (b:3/26/1818-d:2/8/1844) on 12/13/1841 in Hatley, QUE. Methodist Church records They had a daughter Sarah, born 12/4/1842 in Sherbrooke. After Hiram died Sarah moved to Hopkinton, NH and married Lucius Harvey TYLER on 5/10/1852 in Concord , NH . Because Sarah moved to Hopkinton after her husband died I suspect that her paternal grandparents were Capt. Amos HALL, Sr (b:10/1/1761, Stonington, CT-d:10/19/1854, Maple Grove, QUE) and Martha Straw (b:11/28/1764, Hopkinton, NH-d:1/13/1822, Maple Grove, QUE) as they were married in Hopkinton in 1782 and lived there for some time before moving to Ireland Township, Megantic County, QUE in 1807. Although I note that there were some other Halls in Stanstead county around 1820 (Levi, Jabez, Luther, Elam, John and Lewis). Since Sarah and Hiram were married in Hatley it could be that her father was one of the Stanstead Halls and not one of the the sons of Megantic County's Amos HALL. Might you shed some light on Sarah's parents? Dave Barnard, Falmouth, ME 04105 russmatt99@yahoo.com
