Campton Man Killed at Railroad Crossing
Edward A. Clough of Campton was killed Saturday afternoon September 8th when the pick-up truck he was operating was struck by a Boston & Maine freight train at Haartz' private grade Crossing . Officials reported the car was pushed about 600 feet in the crash which occurred about 1:45 p. m.
According to investigation officials the truck was traveling west at the crossing when it was struck broadside by a northbound B & M nine car freight train. The victim was thrown from his vehicle to the ground.
Mr. Clough was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Reginald F. DeWitt of Plymouth, Grafton County Medical Referee who attributed his death to multiple injuries. County Attorney William F. Batchelder of Plymouth, investigating the accident said Mr. Clough, who was semi-retired, was apparently driving the empty truck to a farm where he was working when the collision happened. The freight train, pulled by Engine No. 1567, was reported by police operated by Engineer Carlton E Boyce, fifty, of Concord. The Conductor was Douglas R. Adams of RFD 2, Hooksett, Turnpike, Concord. The body was taken to the Nichols Funeral Home in Plymouth
Funeral services were held at the Campton Baptist Church with Rev. J. Lincoln Thomas officiating. Burial was in Blair Cemetery. Bearers were members of the family, brothers and nephews.
Mr. Clough was born March 20, 1891 in Rumney, son of James and Nellie (Welch) Clough. He was a former resident of Plymouth. He had for many years worked at the E. Dole & Co. Mill in Campton and was a farmer and lumberman.
Survivors are one daughter, Miss Marion Clough of Campton; two brothers, Earl G. Clough of Gilford and James R. Clough of Laconia; a sister Mrs. Iona Little of Gilmanton and several nieces and nephews. Friends extend deepest sympathy to the family in the tragic death of their loved one. >The Plymouth Record, 1962
