bullet  General Notes:

Isaac was first employed as captain of a freight vessel. From 1844 to 1872 he and the family lived either in Waterford or Crown Point. By 1872 he had taken up residence in Crown Point where he built a hotel (The Spaulding House) of which he served as a proprietor. He remained the owner of the hotel until 1880 when he sold the property and built a boarding house near the Crown Point blast furnace. On August 14 1884 Eunice died very tragically of injuries sustained from a horse and buggy accident that occurred while she was returning from a picnic in Crown Point Center. Two years passed and Isaac married again to Kate Porter Bradbury who may have herself been widowed. She may have been a resident of Waterford, NY as the ceremony took place there on May 6 1886. It seems reasonable to assume that they returned to Crown Point to live as Isaac owned property there.

Online "Northern New York Historical Newspapers," The Sentinel, Ticonderoga, Thu, 17 Dec 1896, 4th Col, obit of Captain Isaac Spaulding: "The subject of this notice was born at Crown Point, Essex Co., N.Y., Sept. 27, 1818, and he was the youngest of a family of nine children, eight sons and one daughter. His father, John Stephen Spaulding, and family were for many years residents of Crown Point.... On Sept. 23, 1843, he was united in marriage with Miss Eunice S. Wells also of Crown Point, and at once the young people commenced housekeeping near Ironville in Crown Point. Many years of his early married life were spent navigating the waters and canal between Port Henry and Jersey City and frequent trips were made to Buffalo as Captain of a freight vessel.... In 1866 he was appointed by S.H. and J.G. Witherbee to the position of private weigh lock inspector at Waterford, N.Y., and held the position until 1872 at which time he retired from business on lake and canal and returned to Crown Point. While at Waterford he was an extensive dealer in pressed hay and coal. After his return to Crown Point he built and was proprietor of the Spaulding House, continuing in the business almost eight years. He then disposed of the property and erected the boarding house near Crown Point Furnaces, where he spent the remainder of his days, departing this life November 30, 1896, at the ripe old age of 78 years one month and 3 days, surrounded by his children and several of his grandchildren. The funeral services were conducted at the Congregational church, Sunday afternoon, a large converse of people being present, and was laid to rest in Forestdale cemetery by the side of the companion of his early married life. Six chidren survive him, Mrs. Hiram Fitch, Ironville; Steven S., at Schenectady, N. Y.; Etta and Elmer at the homestead, Mrs. W. B. Vial, Crown Point and Frank at Mineville...." It is thereafter set forth that Mr. Spaulding was among the kindest and best of men.
