Andrew John 'Jack' Orr CAPE ELIZABETH -- Andrew John 'Jack' Orr, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009. He was born on Oct. 26, 1927, in Portland, the son of Andrew (from Glasgow, Scotland) and Hazel Straw Orr of Portland. Jack attended schools in South Portland and Portland and graduated from Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H. in 1945, where he was active in skiing, lacrosse, and the outing club. He attended the University of Maine in the fall of 1945 and left to join the Army in February 1946. He served as a Tank Commander at Fort Lewis, Washington. In 1947, he returned to the University of Maine where he was inducted into Honorary Societies of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Mu Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi. He graduated in February 1951 as a Distinguished Military Scholar. Jack re-entered the Army in February 1951 during the Korean War, where he served as a First Lieutenant in several assignments including Infantry Combat Rifle Platoon Leader and Headquarters Company Executive Officer. He served as a Reserve Officer for an additional 10 years. After he returned from Korea, he married Fern Elizabeth Wilson of Westbrook in 1954 and they lived in Hartford, Conn., where he was employed by Travelers Insurance Company. They returned to Maine in 1955, when he joined John C. Paige Co. Insurance Agency. In September 1957, they moved to Cape Elizabeth with their two-year old son, John, and one month old daughter, Betsy. In 1963, Jack became involved in Cape Elizabeth Little League and was elected League President in 1966, an office which he held for the next few years. He was Chairman of the School Study and Planning Committee when it was anticipated that a new High school would be built in the late 1960s. Jack also served on the Cape Elizabeth Planning Board for several years. He joined General Electric Company in 1967 at their new facility in South Portland as a production control supervisor. He retired from General Electric at age 55. Jack and Fern took three trips to England and Scotland and two trips to Ireland. Throughout the years, they traveled to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Jack is survived by his wife Fern; his son John and his wife Cyndi and her daughter Haley Geohegan of Bridgeton, his daughter Betsy Orr of Porter; and Paulette Bonneau, a very dear traveling companion on the trips to England, Scotland, and Ireland. He is also survived by his nephew Brent Clark and his wife Kathy together with their children (who know Jack as 'Grampa') Mason, Davis, and Maura Clark of Weston, Mass., his nephew Beach M. Clark Jr. of Georgia and his family, his nephew Kenneth Andrew Clark and his family of California, his nephew William C. Prince and his family of New Hampshire, and his nephew Sanford J. Prince IV and his family of Fryeburg. He is also survived by special twins, Sean Allan and Cameron Keith Wilson, sons of Fern's nephew Allan and his wife Melissa Wilson of Westbrook. Jack was predeceased by his parents; his sister Jane 'Jeannie' Orr Clark and her husband Beach M. Clark, and his sister Jeannette Orr Prince and her husband Sanford Prince III. Graveside services will be private. A public celebration of life will be held 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the E. Hobbs Hospitality Center, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. Arrangements made by the Hobbs Funeral Home.
