John Melvin Straw was the s/o Daniel David Straw and Sarah P. (Melvin) Straw.
John Straw was born in Bradford, NH, and resided in Claremont when at age 32, he enlisted in CO. H, SECOND NEW HAMPSHIRE VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT on April 20, 1861, for 3 months but was not mustered in. He reenlisted in the same unit as a private on May 21, 1861, for 3 years and was mustered in on June 5, 1861. He was wounded at Bull Run, Virginia, on July 21, 1861, and again on June 25, 1862, at Oak Grove, Virginia. He was discharged for disability on Feb. 1, 1863. He also served in the First Regiment of NH Heavy Artillery. (See below.)
A brother, Andrew J., was in the same unit (CO. H, SECOND NEW HAMPSHIRE VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT) and was wounded and captured at Bull Run on July 21, 1861 and died of his wounds on July 25, 1861.
Note that John was wounded during his 1st enlistment with the 2nd NH Infantry. He enlisted in the First New Hampshire Heavy Artillery as a wounded veteran from the First Battle of Bull Run. He enlisted 2 May 1863 from Claremont as a private ae 33 y 1st H A Regt NH and mustered out 11 Sept 1865; died 19 July 1867 in Claremont as a result of his wounds per military records.

John did marry to Louisa (Baker)There were two children, George who died young of gastrointestinal problems and Sarah who lived to adulthood and married Wm Fay of Danvers, MA.
After the death of John, Louisa remarried in 1871 to Jonathan Emery. Louisa and Jonathan are buried in Riverside Cemetery in New Castle, New Hampshire.
